Rice seems to have a tradition for always being plain, which really is perfect since we usually eat rice with something else. It's mostly used as a side for something, typically stuff with a bunch of flavour. On the other hand, it can sometimes be tasty whether it's served with some other meal or enjoyed on its own.

Whenever you're looking for a quick, delicious, well-seasoned, yet full-flavoured side dish, this Garlic Butter Rice recipe would become the new go dish! It is very tasty until you can eat it straight away with a spoonful from the pot. It's a everyone pleaser which is also cheap too!

As you might know, this is can be said as a rice version of garlic bread that works well with everything. Western, Asian, Mexican, Mediterranean, even French. I genuinely can't refer to a specific food or recipe that this wouldn't fit for. So do you want to learn how to do it? Be sure to carefully follow all of the instructions!


Garlic rice is a food common in certain Asian countries. It appears to be very widespread in the Philippines. This is my favourite version; it is really garlicky and buttery, but not overpoweringly much. You are free to increase the garlic and butter to your liking, but I'd recommend starting with the main recipe and then changing it to your liking. Extra butter could well be added at the end to enjoy.

Slicing or mincing garlic and frying it till golden and crispy is optional, but I believe that's the highlight of this recipe. It doesn't give a heavy garlic flavour, but it adds texture with a pleasant garlic flavour. You also can use Crispy Fried Shallots or Garlic, which are available in bottles at Asian markets as well as some groceries. They are so delicious as I always keep a bottle on hand and sprinkle it on salad, soup, or anything you like! I enjoy creating rice this way since it is so flavourful and seasoned well till it can be enjoyed plain like that. I can have it as a meal as I wanted to eat it straight from the pot. I literally mouth-watering right now.


  • Butter

  • Garlic

  • Broth (chicken or vegetables)


You don't really have to wash the rice so many times to make it soft! If you follow this recipe well with ratio of rice and liquid, it will be amazing all time!

  1. Melt butter. Heat up the butter in a medium sized pot with a medium fire. Then add garlic and stir until fragrant.

  2. Stir uncooked rice into the garlic butter until evenly coat with the garlic butter flavours. Beside covers it in fat, it is also preventing from clumping as it cooks.

  3. Add broth together with dried herbs, salt and pepper. This is the amazing part! You remember how it used to be said that you shouldn't match hot fat with water? But here, as well as you're doing it cautiously, you are free to disregard the advice. After toasting the rice, insert the hot broth cautiously. You will hear sizzle, cackle as soon as you put the liquid.

  4. Mix well and continue cooking with medium high heat, UNCOVERED.

  5. Turn down the heat to small, cover it with a lid, then cooked for around 15 minutes, or until the liquid has been absorbed.

  6. Take out from the heat and set aside for 5 minutes. After removing the pan from the stove, put a clean tea towel under the lid to soak any excess moisture.

  7. Fluff with a fork and you'll see at a most incredible fluffy rice you've ever seen!

  8. Served it with extra butter and fried garlic chips (optional). Mixed in at the end to create additional flavour.


If you're searching for a rice recipe that's both flavourful and simple to serve as a side dish, you might need these tips to ensure it's all very fragrant and delicious!

  • In this recipe, Chicken or vegetable stock are needed, but you can substitute with plain water. Just take a note to use low sodium stock or your rice will be too salty. When you're using normal stock, easily decrease the amount of salt you use.

  • Long grain rice is recommended for the best performance. You may want to use Basmati or Jasmine rice too.

  • This is the crucial part - Don't open the lid during the cooking. Allow the steam to do its work.


In a skillet, heat a generous knob of butter and insert chopped or sliced garlic. The garlic flavour merges the butter as it melts and foams. The pleasant fragrance of toasted garlic and the nutty smell of butter that starting to brown will greet you soon. Take the garlic out from the butter once they have turned a pale golden colour then place them on paper towels until cool. If you wait, once they are browned, they will tastes burnt. Sprinkle with a gentle salt and enjoy your work. You just created garlic chips and flavoured butter with garlic seasoning!


Garlic butter rice can replace any plain rice as a side dish. Think a juicy piece of steak, lamb Garlic butter rice can be used as a side dish instead as a plain rice. Try with a tender steak, chicken curry, butter chicken, or our Creamy Chicken. Add on some roasted veggies and be well-to-enjoy!


It's easy! Just allow them to cool to room temperature before transferring to an air - tight container. Good for 2 or 3 days.
